About a month ago, I went viral on TikTok, and not small potatoes viral. We're talking 500k likes viral. We're talking strangers finding my Instagram account and DMing me to start a parasocial relationship viral. In seven days, I watched my follower count go from around 700 people to nearly 5,300, which is a lot for a socially anxious INFP who typically sticks to Twitter. Virality on TikTok is tide-like. In my case, my little Jane Eyre joke got thousands of likes and interactions the first few days, quieted for about a week, then got thousands of likes and interactions again. That cycle repeated for a month. If there's any science to virality, it's surely steeped in theory, like the existence of black holes. I don't know that there's any real secret to it, aside from the fact that it seems to favor the content you least expect to go viral and the content you put two ounces of effort into (I note with the bitterness of someone who made a whole-ass charcuterie snowboard that only got 500 views). I've gone scary viral multiple times and am slowly figuring some stuff out-now in the context of how I can use TikTok to grow my own creative career and maybe market my writing. I used a trending sound with an irresistible hook I changed the context/angle of the trending sound TikToks, I've found, are the same way: to make a popular, overused trend more interesting, you need to find a new angle. If you jump on a trend too late, it's already going to be all over the place and people may be bored of it. You have to spice things up. That story was way crazier than anything else I could have told from my own life, and turning the trend into a joke about an old novel instead of a true story was a fun way to switch things up to make it more interesting. I really like Jane Eyre. I never see Jane Eyre content because it's almost never in the mainstream lexicon. I made that video because I thought it would be funny (much like writing the story you wish you could read), and it turns out that creating for yourself, not everybody, is a great way to put interesting things into the world and attract your people.
